Tribal Fusion Belly Dance ~ Technical Foundation – Volume 1
Review
This DVD, taught by sisters Nara and Jala, really means what it says - it covers the foundations of Tribal Fusion. If you've never done belly dance before, this is a good place to start because it teaches and explains the basics well - and there aren't many other Tribal Fusion DVD's suitable for total beginners.
However, it's not… Continue reading
Gothic Bellydance
This is advertised as "the darker side of fusion". I have serious reservations about Gothic Bellydance, or Raks Gothique as some call it. As I've said before, I feel it sometimes takes Fusion so far that it loses all connection with belly dance. And even when it is identifiably belly dancing, it's so self-absorbed that the dancer seems to be… Continue reading
Bellydance – Tribal Fusion NYC
This Tribal fusion DVD by Darshan makes much of the fact that it adds a "New York edge" to belly dancing. I'm not sure that's true, but she does cover some less usual fusion elements - "Tribalesque" and "World" (samba/salsa fusion).
It's in a predictable instructional format, with a workout/drill session followed by combos which are then put together in… Continue reading
Tribal Fusion Fundamentals
If you're a Bellydance Superstars fan, you may want to include this DVD, by four Bellydance Superstar Tribal dancers, in your collection. Kami, Moria, Samantha and Sherri all give performances as well as their instructional section. But if you want to learn tribal fusion, you might want to think twice!
The name "Tribal Fusion Fundamentals" is misleading, because this DVD… Continue reading
Fluid Tribal Bellydance by Fayzah
This is an unusual instructional DVD in that it doesn't instruct! It's more like a dictionary of movements. Fayzay demonstrates a huge range of different moves and combos but doesn't offer much explanation and doesn't drill them. Often she repeats a movement only once or twice.
I'd say this could be a great resource for the intermediate-advanced dancer looking for… Continue reading
Modern Tribal Bellydance (Asharah)

This is a complete Tribal belly dance class at intermediate level, taught by Asharah.
It starts with a warmup drawn from yoga and ballet, proceeds to a long technique and drilling session and finishes with no less than six combos which are combined into a choreography, plus a cooldown.
You'll especially like this DVD if you want to learn strobing,… Continue reading
Tribal Fusion Bellydance with Sharon Kihara
Sharon Kihara has been somewhat overshadowed in the Belly Dance Superstars by Rachel Brice - but I have to say, I prefer Sharon's style.
The same holds true about her DVD! I've used Rachel's DVD for some time, but I prefer Sharon's now because there's more explanations, plus there are combinations as well as just drills.
Gripes - I think… Continue reading
FatChanceBellyDance Tribal Basics Vol.5 Cues and Transitions
What can you say about Fat Chance Belly Dance DVDs? If you are serious about studying ATS, you need them. Period!
Carolena herself teaches on this DVD.
Although the description says Vol 5 covers cues and transitions, it's more like a class with posture work, warm-up stretches and a "moving meditation" before moving on to a series of drills. The… Continue reading
