The Tribal Dance

The camerawork here is not the greatest, but if you're into Tribal fusion belly dance, there's plenty of interest on this DVD, which aims to highlight the range of fusions out there.

I certainly enjoyed the variety of different approaches and most of the dances were well executed.

Review of Bellydance Underworld

Am I getting old?  With a few honorable exceptions, I found most of the routines on this DVD terminally boring. I really don't see what's "experimental" about dancer after dancer doing minor variations on Rachel Brice.

Sometimes I feel Tribal fusion goes so far over the edge, it stops being belly dance and becomes something else.  Much of the material on this DVD falls into that category for me.  I've enjoyed seeing these excellent dancers perform elsewhere, but not here.

Oh, dear.  Watching this DVD was like attending a local hafla:  a mixture of performances from professional to amateur, some of which work and some of which don't.

Some of these performers have taken "fusion" so far, the dance is no longer even recognizable as belly dancing, if you ask me.

Ho-hum.  I found it hard to get excited about this Bellydance Superstars DVD - another compilation of their Tribal stars, recorded in 2007.

If you're a die-hard Superstars fan, you'll no doubt want to add this - but it's unlikely to add anything new to your collection.
